Kobus Naval Design (KND) was founded in 1984 by principal Naval Designer Kobus Potgieter who was one of the first RIB manufacturers in South Africa.The in-house team at Kobus Naval Design consists of naval architects, mechanical engineers and industrial designers. KND prides itself on its high quality delivery of RIB and High Speed Craft projects in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the United States.
This team of specialists at KND is responsible for the design, construction and repair of ships and boats including RIBs, RHIBs, ferries, warships and high-speed craft. The commercial designs range from a 6.5 metre RIB to 80 metre Offshore Patrol Craft. Designs can be based on GRP, FRP or aluminium construction. Applications include crew boats, patrol boats, search & rescue boats, military vessels and landing craft.
KND utilise a 5-axis robotic CNC machining system to mill complex patterns, plugs and moulds. The use of 3D printing / prototyping from digital data gives KND a fast and cost effective form of rapid prototyping to produce detailed models for product design, development and presentation.
Kobus Naval Design professional services are designed to assist clients from concept through to certification. Assessing a client’s needs for a craft includes evaluating climate, operational conditions and special requirements. KND work with clients on targeted applications which evaluate the ‘like-to-have’ versus the ‘reality’ features. A KND design is a complete solution from preliminary design through to final certification, incorporating all relevant factors including performance predictions and the relevant international regulations of ISO, ABS and SOLAS.
